Designing a Digital Gallery for a World Class Photographer.

Overview

David Yarrow is one of the world’s leading fine art photographers, renowned for his powerful and emotionally charged images. He approached us with a clear goal: to create a digital space that would reflect the elegance and intensity of his work, while also serving as a platform to showcase exhibitions, tell his story, and sell selected pieces.

The Challenge

The main challenge was to create a website that felt like an art gallery, refined, minimal, and emotionally engaging, while still offering full e commerce functionality and storytelling capabilities. The visual experience had to be respectful to the work itself: photography with strong narratives and striking eyes, often the focal point of his images. It was essential to design around this, not over it.

The Process

I started by mapping out a simple but effective site architecture with a clear focus on visual hierarchy, allowing David’s imagery to take center stage. We avoided clutter and embraced a minimal aesthetic, using full screen visuals, neutral tones, and elegant typography to enhance the viewing experience.

The "About" and "Charity" sections were especially important. David wanted these pages to go beyond standard bios and instead tell a story. To achieve this, I designed a horizontal scroll experience with smooth transitions and layered storytelling, creating a cinematic feel as users moved through the content.

For the shop, I ensured the e commerce section felt seamless and cohesive with the rest of the site. We kept the purchasing experience simple, emphasizing the artwork and offering clear pathways to explore and collect.

The Result

The result was a visually immersive and emotionally resonant website that met David Yarrow’s vision. It showcased his portfolio with elegance, supported sales of high value prints and books, and provided a digital space where viewers could deeply engage with his mission and story. By merging storytelling with minimalist UX, the platform became a true extension of his artistic identity.
